Olmesartan medoxomil, a prodrug, is hydrolyzed to olmesartan during absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
BENICAR HCT
®
is indicated for the treatment of hypertension.
This fixed dose combination is not indicated for initial therapy (see

Published Studies Related to Benicar HCT (Olmesartan / Hydrochlorothiazide)
Olmesartan/amlodipine vs olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide in hypertensive patients with metabolic syndrome: the OLAS study. [2011.06] We studied the effects of treatment with olmesartan/amlodipine and olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide on inflammatory and metabolic parameters (including new-onset diabetes as a secondary endpoint) in non-diabetic hypertensive patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS)... Both olmesartan-based combinations were effective, but the amlodipine combination resulted in metabolic and anti-inflammatory effects that may have advantages over the hydrochlorothiazide combination.
Effect of delapril/manidipine vs olmesartan/ hydrochlorothiazide combination on insulin sensitivity and fibrinogen in obese hypertensive patients. [2008] OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of delapril/manidipine vs olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) combination on insulin sensitivity and plasma fibrinogen in obese hypertensive patients... CONCLUSION: In obese hypertensive patients the delapril/manidipine combination but not the olmesartan/HCTZ combination significantly decreased insulin resistance and plasma fibrinogen levels, despite the similar BP lowering efficacy.
Evaluation of antihypertensive therapy with the combination of olmesartan medoxomil and hydrochlorothiazide. [2004.03] BACKGROUND: Most patients with hypertension require more than one agent to control blood pressure (BP). The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of the angiotensin II receptor blocker olmesartan medoxomil in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)... CONCLUSIONS: Olmesartan medoxomil/HCTZ combination therapy produced BP reductions of up to 26.8/21.9 mm Hg and was well tolerated.
A review of olmesartan medoxomil monotherapy: antihypertensive efficacy similar to that of other angiotensin II receptor blocker/hydrochlorothiazide combinations? [2002.11] Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have been available in the United States since 1995...
Olmesartan medoxomil combined with hydrochlorothiazide improves 24-hour blood pressure control in moderate-to-severe hypertension. [2011.11.25] Abstract Background: 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring has been shown to be more reliable than conventional measurements for hypertension assessment and the associated increased risk of cardiovascular events. Olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide combination therapy has demonstrated increased blood pressure lowering over 24 hours compared with the component monotherapies...
Clinical Trials Related to Benicar HCT (Olmesartan / Hydrochlorothiazide)
Drug Interaction Study of Olmesartan in Healthy Chinese Volunteers [Completed]
Hypertension and hyperuricaemia are widespread conditions. There is significant overlap
between the two conditions. Serum uric acid (SUA) is currently recognized as a risk factor
for cardiovascular disease. Thus, at some point in their therapy, hypertensive patients with
hyperuricaemia are likely to require concurrent treatment with anti-hypertensive and
hypouricaemic agents. For this reason, it is important to determine whether there are any
pharmacokinetic interactions resulting from the concomitant administration of such
agents. Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist and effective and well tolerated
in the treatment of arterial hypertension. Probenecid is a well-established hypouricaemic
agent for the treatment of hyperuricaemia and gout. The goal of this study was to examine the
impact of coadministration of probenecid on the pharmacokinetic parameters and tolerability
of olmesartan in healthy volunteers.
Efficacy Study of Olmesartan Medoxomil on Coronary Atherosclerosis and Epicardial Adipose Tissue(EAT) [Recruiting]
The purpose of this study is to determine whether olmesartan medoxomil is effective in the
treatment of coronary atherosclerosis progression and epicardial adipose tissue(EAT) volume
reduction in patients with coronary atherosclerosis detected by coronary CT
angiography(CCTA).
Assessment of Efficacy and Safety of Olmesartan Medoxomil in Children and Adolescent Patients With High Blood Pressure [Completed]
This study assesses the efficacy and safety of olmesartan medoxomil in children ages 1-16
with high blood pressure. After a 5-week blinded treatment period of up to 5 weeks
participants can continue to take olmesartan medoxomil (OM) for up to an additional 46
weeks.
Efficacy and Safety of LCZ696 in Comparison to Olmesartan in Asian Patients With Essential Hypertension [Completed]
This study will assess the efficacy and safety of multiple doses of LCZ696 compared to
olmesartan in Asian patients with essential hypertension
Olmesartan Comparison to Losartan in Hypertensive Subjects [Completed]
This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of the FDA approved blood pressure
medication olmesartan medoxomil compared to the FDA approved medication losartan potassium.

| Benicar HCT review by 55 year old male patient | | Rating |
Overall rating: | | |
Effectiveness: | | Moderately Effective |
Side effects: | | Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | Hypertension |
Dosage & duration: | | 20 mg/day taken once a day for the period of a couple of months |
Other conditions: | | Overweight but no other conditions |
Other drugs taken: | | none | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Blood pressure was decreased initially to where it should have been, and gradually stopped being so effective |
Side effects: | | Severe rectal pain, beginning around 4 weeks into the treatment. At first there was burning, after bowel movements, then increased to severe burning all the time, then to pain, and finally severe pain (could not sit or lay down). No hemorrhoids, tears, or fisures, but the pain continued, even if no bowel movements for days. Finally stopped taking the medication at the end of August 2009, but the symptoms continue even now (Feb 2010), although not nearly as bad. Now the pain just makes me sit sideways, but at least I can sit and lay down to sleep. |
Comments: | | I had never been diagnosed with high blood pressure, but had recently gained several pounds because of the double round of steroids I was put on because of a severe skin rash (seasonal allergic reaction). Since we had recently moved I didn't have a PCP yet and the rash on my arms looked like it may have been getting infected, I went to a local emergent care center and saw a doctor there. They took my blood pressure and immediately put me on Benicar HCT, 20 mg, once a day. I took the medication as prescribed until the anal pain got to be too bad. Since going off the medication my BP is a little elevated but I'm reluctant to go back on any meds, especially no one seems to be willing to admit the Benicar caused this problem or is offering any solutions to help it get better. |
