When used in pregnancy during the second and third trimesters, drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. HYZAAR SUMMARY
HYZAAR® 50/12.5 (losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide), HYZAAR® 100/12.5 (losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide) and HYZAAR® 100/25 (losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide) combine an angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist and a diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide.
Hypertension
HYZAAR is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. This fixed dose combination is not indicated for initial therapy of hypertension, except when the hypertension is severe enough that the value of achieving prompt blood pressure control exceeds the risk of initiating combination therapy in these patients (see CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY, Pharmacodynamics and Clinical Effects, and DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION).
Hypertensive Patients with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy
HYZAAR is indicated to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, but there is evidence that this benefit does not apply to Black patients. This study was conducted to determine the effects of a tablet combining losartan/hydrochlorothiazide (L/HCTZ) in comparison with losartan alone in Japanese diabetic patients with hypertension. Thirty consecutive Japanese diabetic patients with hypertension were randomly assigned to group A, receiving losartan alone for the first 3 months, then L/HCTZ for the next 3 months, or group B, receiving L/HCTZ for the first 3 months, then losartan alone for the next 3 months...

| Comments: | | When I switched to the generic brand the side effects were moderate to severe, but after returning to the non generic Hyzaar once again, the side effects were less severe and acceptable once again. I wore a heart monitor and took active blood pressure readings in order to determine if the generic brand enhanced the side effects. While still not conclusive in my mind, I've elected to pay the extra dollars for the non generic brand. |
