PROPRANOLOL SUMMARY
Propranolol hydrochloride, USP is a synthetic beta-adrenergic receptor-blocking agent.
Hypertension
Propranolol hydrochloride extended-release capsules are indicated in the management of hypertension. It may be used alone or used in combination with other antihypertensive agents, particularly a thiazide diuretic. Propranolol hydrochloride extended-release capsules are not indicated in the management of hypertensive emergencies.
Angina Pectoris Due to Coronary Atherosclerosis
Propranolol hydrochloride extended-release capsules are indicated to decrease angina frequency and increase exercise tolerance in patients with angina pectoris.
Migraine
Propranolol hydrochloride extended-release capsules are indicated for the prophylaxis of common migraine headache. The efficacy of propranolol in the treatment of a migraine attack that has started has not been established, and propranolol is not indicated for such use.
Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis
Propranolol hydrochloride extended-release capsules improve NYHA functional class in symptomatic patients with hypertrophic subaortic stenosis.

Endoscopic variceal band ligation compared with propranolol for prophylaxis of first variceal bleeding. [2011.04] Administration of nonselective beta-blockers in prophylaxis of first variceal bleeding is not suitable for all patients. Thus, we evaluated endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVBL) in primary prevention of bleeding in patients with cirrhosis and large esophageal varices... Effect of propranolol on word fluency in autism. [2011.03] OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Autism is characterized by repetitive behaviors and impaired socialization and communication. Preliminary evidence showed possible language benefits in autism from the beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol. Earlier studies in other populations suggested propranolol might benefit performance on tasks involving a search of semantic and associative networks under certain conditions. Therefore, we wished to determine whether this benefit of propranolol includes an effect on semantic fluency in autism... CONCLUSIONS: Results are consistent with a selective beneficial effect of propranolol on flexibility of access to semantic and associative networks in autism, with no observed effect on phonological networks. Further study will be necessary to understand potential clinical implications of this finding.
Clinical Trials Related to Propranolol
Efficacy of Propranolol Treatment to Prevent Melanoma Progression [Not yet recruiting]
Melanoma's incidence is increasing worldwide. The efforts made in melanoma screening led to
an earlier detection of the primary tumour and a better prognosis, but melanoma remains an
aggressive cancer when it comes to its metastatic stage. Three recent retrospective studies
compared groups of patients diagnosed with primary melanoma and treated with betablockers
for another indication to patients who never received betablockers. In these three studies,
the outcome of the disease is significantly better for people under betablocker treatment
with a decreased rate of recurrence and a better 5 years survival rate. Here we want to
investigate the efficacy and the tolerability of an adjuvant treatment with propranolol for
patients suffering from a primary melanoma with a high risk of recurrence.
Corticosteroids With Placebo Versus Corticosteroids With Propranolol Treatment of Infantile Hemangiomas (IH) [Terminated]
This is a prospective randomized, double-blind study to compare the clinical efficacy of
infantile hemangioma treatment using propranolol with corticosteroids as compared to therapy
with corticosteroids and placebo. We hypothesize that a two-month treatment period with
propranolol plus corticosteroids is more effective at reducing infantile hemangioma size and
vascularity when compared to corticosteroids used without propranolol for the same time
period.
Safety and Efficacy of Propranolol Eye Drops in Treating Retinopathy of Premature [Completed]
The aim of the present study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of propranolol eye drops
in preterm newborns with a precocious stage of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Preterm
newborns (gestational age 23-32 weeks) with a stage 2 ROP (zone II without plus) will
receive propranolol eye drops treatment until retinal vascularization will be completed.
Propranolol concentrations will be measured on dried blood spots during the first 3 days of
treatment and at the steady state. Cardiovascular and respiratory parameters will be
continuously monitored. Blood samplings checking metabolic, renal and liver functions will
be performed periodically, as well as cardiac function, in order to verify the treatment
safety. Serial ophthalmological evaluations will be planned to monitor the efficacy of the
treatment, the ROP progression and the possible complications.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of propranolol 0. 2% eye
drops in treating preterm newborns with a precocious stage of retinopathy of prematurity
(ROP). Preterm newborns (gestational age 23-32 weeks) with a stage 1 ROP will receive
propranolol 0. 2% eye drops treatment until retinal vascularization will be completed, but no
more than 90 days.

Effects of Propranolol on the Encoding and Retrieval of Emotional Material After Single Dose Administration in Healthy Young Subjects [Completed]
1. To evaluate the effects of a single oral (80 mg) dose of propranolol on the encoding of
emotional pictures as assessed by peripheral physiological and electrocortical
parameters in a healthy population.
2. To evaluate the effects of a single oral (80 mg) dose of propranolol on the retrieval
of emotional pictures as assessed by electrocortical parameters in a healthy
population.

Benefits: | | I have suffered of rapid heart rate for sometime because of my thyroid problem. I was given this medicine to get my heart rate controlled. First few weeks the medicine did not seem to work for me but my doctor increased the dosage to 20mg twice a day, then that was the time I started to feel my heart rate slow down. The medicine is definitely effective but I guess the effect of it depends on the individual as it requres a certain dosage for it to work effectively. |
