Catapres review by 58 year old female patient

  Rating
Overall rating:
Effectiveness:   Moderately Effective
Side effects:   No Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   sleep disruption due to hotflashes at night
Dosage & duration:   0.1 mg taken one per night for the period of still using
Other conditions:   none
Other drugs taken:   none

Reported Results
Benefits:   I am sleeping more deeply, especially during the first four or five hours after falling asleep. I still have hot flashes during those hours, however I seem to be in a deeper state of sleep and during those hours I usually don't fully awake during the hot flash, as I used to do. I used to be almost fully awake every time I experienced a hot flash (every 1 to 1.5 hours). Now I get a few hours of fairly good sleep at the beginning of my sleep cycle.
Side effects:   There are no adverse side effects so far. Some nights I don't sleep as deeply (as described above) during the first few hours of sleep. I'm not sure what makes the difference from one night to the next-perhaps the amount of sleep I got in the few nights previous.
Comments:   I take one tablet at bedtime. I try to delay taking it until I'm just about ready to go to sleep, since the effect is most pronounced in the first few hours after taking the tablet. Later in the sleep cycle, my hot flashes wake me up more fully, as they have for the last four years.

Catapres review by 45 year old female patient

  Rating
Overall rating:
Effectiveness:   Marginally Effective
Side effects:   Mild Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   High Blood pressure
Dosage & duration:   Catapres 150 ug; betaloc 47.5mg taken daily for the period of have been taking approximately 2 years
Other conditions:   Rosacea
Other drugs taken:   Betaloc (Metoprolol)

Reported Results
Benefits:   Catapres was initially effective at reducing my blood pressure on it's own, but there was reduced effectiveness over time. For this reason I began taking Betaloc in addition to catapres (daily). Taking these two drugs together has resulted in good blood pressure control with a fairly low dose of each drug. A side benefit of taking catapres has been that it helps to control my Rosacea symptoms. I have had the reason for this explained to me, but cannot recal the details (has something to do with Catapres effect on the sympathetic nervous system).
Side effects:   I experience slight sedation after taking Catapres which is helpful for me as a light sleeper. I believe I experience some slight lethargy that is ongoing, but not troublesome. When I first started taking Catapres I got a very dry mouth, but this quickly went away. I have experienced no other side effects that I am aware of.
Comments:   I'm not sure what this question means, and may have already answered it. I am taking Catapres and Betaloc for longstanding essential hypertension. I have noticed that when I take these two drugs together their individual effectiveness is amplified. I have been cautioned by my doctor that it is important not to suddenly stop taking this drug combination as this could cause a heart attack.

Overall rating:
Effectiveness:   Highly Effective
Side effects:   Mild Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   high blood pressure
Dosage & duration:   one tab twice daily taken twice daily for the period of since 2007 to current
Other conditions:   hot flashes
Other drugs taken:   lisinopril/hctz 20-12.5 tab

Reported Results
Benefits:   (clonidine)It assisted in lowering my blood pressure by causing me to have a more voluminous (not more frequent)urination, when urged. Also,it aided in- depressing my agonizing hot flashes. They came at sequential intervals at time of menses and would last in that manner until completion of menses.Thereafter, they were intermitten daily.
Side effects:   If this is the side effect. It would be, soon after taking the meds,There is a timed-released drowsy effect that occurs, within a matter of 15-20 minutes. This is the only so-called side effect that I've experienced. But,I guess,it is a matter of where you are and what's on your agenda during this side-effect.
Comments:   I'm not completely sure what to write here, that would consist of fifty words.I take (Clonidine)-0.1mg 1 tab twice daily and (Lisinopril/HCTZ)-20mgs.12.5 1tab,twice daily.I've learned to take them with food.Earlier, when introduced to these meds, upon attending a Drs. appointment and having my blood pressure checked, the reading would be high and I felt no internal or external symptoms. The inquiry would be have you taken your meds? and I had. So,it was suggested that I try administering them with food.Thereafter,no more high readings and entered a normalized phase.
