Effectiveness:   Highly Effective
Side effects:   No Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   heartburn
Dosage & duration:   300mg taken as needed for the period of as needed- 3 years
Other conditions:   scleroderma CREST w/Sjogren's
Other drugs taken:   levoxyl, prevacid, hydrocodone

Reported Results
Benefits:   heartburn was usually decreased significately if not totally
Side effects:   none
Comments:   I get heartburn caused more from my condition than from food. There were times that I had "breakthrough" heartburn even after using prevacid. I generally don't even use the prevacid now. I do try to not eat things that will cause heartburn but I still get heartburn often. I take the ranitidine often, but not every time I have heartburn. There are some times when I will take one or two Tums to get a jumpstart against the burning.

Effectiveness:   Highly Effective
Side effects:   No Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Dosage & duration:   150mg taken twice daily for the period of 12 years
Other conditions:   none
Other drugs taken:   none

Reported Results
Benefits:   I began suffering from "heartburn" in my late thirties. This condition progressed to a daily occurence. Not willing to avoid spicey foods my physician prescribed ranitidine. I recall he intially prescribed 150mg twice daily. At one point he recommended 300mg twice aday. But 150mg twice daily is working. The dosage reduced the occurence of heartburn (my symptoms)to near zero.
Side effects:   I am not aware of any side effects. However that does not mean I have not experienced any. I think headaches are a side effect and I get them occasionally, but I cannot tie it to the medication. In any case I do not experience any kind of debilitating medical problems or even annoying ones that I can link to taking ranitidine.
Comments:   I take a 150mg tablet in the morning before or during breakfast and then another at lunch. This combination prevents heartburn throughout the day. Late night dinners may produce heartburn, often I'll take a tablet prior or immediately after as prevention. Also I elevated my bed about 2" at the head to prevent what had been fairly frequent events of stomach acid somehow working its way into my mouth at night. This drug and the elevated bed has reduced this to a very rare occurence, and again often associated with late evening meals if I do not take a tablet in the evening.

Condition / reason:   acid reflux
Dosage & duration:   300 mg taken 2x day for the period of 10 years
Other conditions:   none
Other drugs taken:   none

Reported Results
Benefits:   completely stopped all heartburn. do occassionally have an acidic taste in my mouth in the morning, so I suspect that there may be a small amount of reflux still occurring.
Side effects:   none
Comments:   diagnosed with acid reflux by a gastroscopy. Prescribed the ranitidine originally. When mentioning the occassional acidic taste in the morning, the doctor changed me to Prevacid which took away both the heartburn and the taste. But when I looked at the package insert through the Prevacid website this showed more carcinogenic results than the ranitidine which is next to none. So I am taking only ranitidine from now on.
