Overall rating:
Effectiveness:   Moderately Effective
Side effects:   No Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   hypothyroidism
Dosage & duration:   .100 MG taken once a day for the period of 8 years
Other conditions:   None
Other drugs taken:   Hormone replacement therapy

Reported Results
Benefits:   It seemed to stabilize my metabolism.
Side effects:   I didn't seem to see any and was frequently not sure if I was actually getting the right dose. It took about 3 years to get the current dose right. And since that time I haven't changed it. I have found out that the dosage I am taking is the very least amount I can take and still take thyroid medicine.
Comments:   I take one thyroid pill a day. I did originally take Synthyroid, but changed to the generic brand about 5 years ago to save on total costs. Since I have been on generic brands, the shape of the pill has changed. Also, so has the directions on taking it. Now I can hardly take it and have it be effective, because I have to take the pill on an empty stomach, with a full glass of water, in the morning, and I can't have anything that might interfere with its absorption for 4 hours -- such as food, vitamins, or any other medicine. So I do not know if it is effective or not, since I would have to try and take it in the middle of the night. I am not going to do that, so I take it at night before going to sleep --- without a full glass of water.

Benefits:   No improvement at all in symptoms.
Side effects:   Over the past few months I have developed borderline hypertension, increased bruising, my hair texture and skin continue to worsen.
Comments:   At 14 I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and this was corrected through medication (thyroid disorders are prevalent in my mother's family). I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (TSH 14.5) this past December and evidence of an auto immune disorder. Since, I have been on 50mcg daily, my TSH tests normal but there has been no improvements in symptoms.

Tirosint review by 36 year old female patient

  Rating
Overall rating:
Effectiveness:   Marginally Effective
Side effects:   Moderate Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   Mild Hypothyroidism
Dosage & duration:   75 MCG to 50 MCG (dosage frequency: one/day) for the period of 3 months
Other conditions:   None
Other drugs taken:   Birth control pills

Reported Results
Benefits:   TSH numbers brought down to normal levels, seemed to improve constipation, dry skin and cold intolerance
Side effects:   Increased fatigue and sleepiness were the worst side effects. On the 75 MCG dose, which put me into Hyperthyroidism according to TSH numbers, I fell asleep in public twice. This has NEVER happened to me before. I could not get up in the mornings, was tired all the time and had brain fog. I think I could've slept 24/7. Very frustrating. Also had weight gain.
Comments:   Began at 75 MCG and they lowered my dose to 50 MCG and the fatigue/sleepy/brain fog symptoms got better (I did not fall asleep in public again) but I was still more tired and foggy than I was before I began taking the medication. I took the medication in textbook form--first thing in the morning and did not eat for 4 hours. Finally, the doctor gave me permission to stop taking because I was afraid the physical symptoms were going to negatively impact my job. Had my blood checked last week after one month off the medication and numbers showed I was back in hypothyroidism. Doctor is mystified at my symptoms, which for the most part seem to be the opposite of what they should have been on the medication. He prescribed me Armour today and I am scheduled to go back in 6 weeks to have my blood checked. I am a healthy, 36 year old female. I exercise regularly and attempt a healthy diet. We'll see if this works better for me.

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   Fatigue, weight gain, depression
Dosage & duration:   .50 (dosage frequency: 1x/day in the a.m.) for the period of 4 weeks to as of 5/13/09
Other conditions:   Tension headaches, anxiety, OCD, depression
Other drugs taken:   Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Klonopin

Reported Results
Benefits:   I have not noticed any benefits so far. My weight has remaind the same. The depression has not gotten noticeably better, and fatigue continues to be a problem.
Side effects:   I have not noticed any side effects thus far. I've been on the Synthroid for only 4 weeks, so it may not yet be at its full effectiveness. I've also just found out I should take it on an empty stomach and then wait an 30 min. to and hour prior to eating for it to be 100% effective.
Comments:   I am taking the Synthroid to increase metabolism, stop weight gain, help with depression, and to reduce fatigue. I have been complaining of chronic fatigue for 10 years, and the depression has been an issue for about the same length of time. The weight gain has occurred within the last 3 years and was significant (for me) within the last two years. My primary physician told me that my levels were within range; however, the NP I work for (a mental health nurse practitioner)reviewed the levels for depression and found the my levels were just below the norm, enough to make a difference.

Effectiveness:   Highly Effective

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   low thyroid
Dosage & duration:   75 mg taken 1x day for the period of First prescribed 3/07, still take daily
Other conditions:   Occasional acid reflux
Other drugs taken:   None

Reported Results
Benefits:   I had experienced decreased energy and increasing tiredness for several years. It got to the point I was taking naps for the first time since I was a small child, and still didn't feel refreshed. I also felt cold frequently and had put on a good 20 pounds in a year. When I went for my annual physical, my blood work came back with high cholesterol for the first time. I thought it was advancing middle age. Fortunately, my MD put it all together and ordered a thyroid test. I was very low. Within two weeks, I felt energized and my mood improved. I have shed some (not all, darn it) of the weight and my cholesterol score is lower.
Side effects:   I had none except for a few hot flashes (well past menopause) that went away in the first few weeks. I have never been a pill-taker for fear of side effects, but this was a good experience. Fortunately, the initial dose was effective and did not need adjustment.
Comments:   As I said, my doctor spotted the symptoms and ordered a thyroid test. When it came back very low, she prescribed 75 mg a day of levothyroxine, and I felt a little better almost immediately. Within 2 weeks, I felt younger, more energy, better mood and my weight gain stopped. I have enough energy to exercize and with only a slight shift in my fairly healthy diet to less fat and more fruits and vegetables, the weight has slowly come off. I have my thyroid checked every 6 months with good results so far. Between the medication and some dietary changes, my cholesterol is down from 230 to 206. I still have about 6 pounds to get back to my starting weight. Unless there's a permanent cure out there, I won't mind taking this little lifesaver forever.

Side effects:   Moderate Side Effects

Treatment Info
Condition / reason:   Thyroid/Total Thyroidectomy due to cancer
Dosage & duration:   125 (dosage frequency: 1/day and then double up on weekends) for the period of 6 weeks
Other conditions:   Hashimoto, Celiac, Casein allergy
Other drugs taken:   none

Reported Results
Benefits:   I started taking Tirosint 125mcg 6 weeks ago due to a gluten and caseine allergy. I previously was taking synthroid however, the company couldnt verify the inactive ingredients. So to avoid gluten, caseine, and some really nasty anxiety symptms I switched to the Tirosint. The anxiety symptoms subsided from 1 attack per day to none. This was great!, but then new symptoms started after three weeks.
Side effects:   I felt dperessed, tired and very sore. My finger joints hurt so bad and to the touch. My back, and legs ached. Then my lower legs, ankles and feet started to swell. it is so bad that I cannot walk upon waking in the morning. If Im on my feet for more than an hour I have to elevate my legs due to the pain and swelling. I also gained alot of weight 8lbs. I'm a healthy 37 year old woman, I am active with two small boys, and eat an extremley healthy diet due to my Celiacs and Caseine allergies. I recently had my blood levels checked and to my surprise I was taking way too much Tirosint. My Endo said that the swelling and pain wasnt from the Tirosint and that I should see my Primary doctor...REALLY?? I was shocked due to my "hypo" symptoms. Im thinking of returning to Synthroid and switching doctors...
Comments:   125 mcg Tirosint per day and doubled on Sat and Sun. Listen to your body and be persistent with your doctors.
