I was very pleased to have adequate pain relief without the "fuzzy" feeling and slight nausea previously experienced with other prescription pain relievers. |

Benefits: | | None. though suffering terrible pain from shingles, this drug cause a severe adverse reaction and necessitated calling an ambulance. It created sever pain in another site entirely, so effectively doubled my trouble. |
Side effects: | | Severe upper gastro-intestinal stomach cramps consistent with biliary colic. The pain is so severe that it requires constant movement, there is a tightening sensation round the diaphragm which can easily be confused with the pain of a heart attack. |
Comments: | | Prescribed to deal with severe neuralgic pain from shingles. Stopped treatment after adverse reaction. |

Effectiveness: | | Moderately Effective |
Side effects: | | Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |

Other conditions: | | Severe pain from herniated cervical disk |
Other drugs taken: | | Mobic | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Some reduction of pain |
Side effects: | | Became dependant on it as suffered severe movement disorder/restless legs coming off it, leading to depression and permant movement disorder long after other problems have settled. This is now managed with other drugs, but a neurotherapist has indicated that the Tramadol caused a permanent dopamine imbalance in my brain. |
Comments: | | Was taking Tramadol for assistance with pain caused by the herniated disk. Was also having physiotherapy and anti-inflamatories Mobic. |

Overall rating: | | |
Effectiveness: | | Marginally Effective |
Side effects: | | No Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | Fibromyalgia Pain |
Dosage & duration: | | 100 mg/day taken daily for the period of 6months |
Other conditions: | | hypothyroid, depression |
Other drugs taken: | | Effexor XR, Armour Thyroid | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | In order to get any effects, I had to take 4-5 times the prescribed dosage. The medication is simply VERY WEAK. This drug did prove to me that managing pain on a daily basis, rather than responding to pain, significantly improved my quality of life and activity level. |
Side effects: | | I did not experience any side effects on a normal or high dose. A VERY HIGH dose (only taken accidentally, because I forgot I had taken my usual dose earlier) on an empty stomach, will produce an unpleasant "high" feeling mentally, including spaciness and shakiness. Therefore you can't just keep taking more and more of the drug. |
Comments: | | Bottom line, this drug just isn't very effective. It's more effective, and SIGNIFICANTLY SAFER, than the NSAIDS that docs are still prescribing for fibromylagia. But I am looking for better daily pain management. |

Effectiveness: | | Highly Effective |
Side effects: | | Mild Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | chronic leg pain due to trauma & surgeries |
Dosage & duration: | | 50 mg taken 4/day for the period of months |
Other conditions: | | nerve injury & very sensitive to pain |
Other drugs taken: | | neurontin, prevacid, advil, tylenol | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Significantly improved leg pain and allowed my child to use the leg and get stonger. Kept her from returning to narcotics. She was able to continue physical therapy and resume school. This site insists I write 50 words in this block, but I have covered all the relevant information. I just wanted people to know that once you adjust to this medicine it was a big help for my child's leg pain. I hope this is enough words. |
Side effects: | | Major initial side effects, but those improved significantly within a week. Stongly recommend increasing amount slowly and will probably need to wean off this drug. Initial side effects were headache, stomach discomfort, sensitivity to sound, etc. Again hang in there it was worthwhile for my child. |
Comments: | | Has had many surgeries since an accident 3 years ago. |

Overall rating: | | |
Effectiveness: | | Considerably Effective |
Side effects: | | Moderate Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | sciatic nerve pain |
Dosage & duration: | | 50 mg taken every 4-6 hrs. for the period of 4 months |
Other conditions: | | none |
Other drugs taken: | | none | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | It gave moderate relief to the sciatic nerve pain I was experiencing. As the severity of the pain lessened, it could totally ease the pain. |
Side effects: | | I experienced constipation that became worse the longer I took the pain med. |
Comments: | | As I began having severe sciatic nerve pain, the doctor prescribed tramadol to help with the pain. I was also receiving physical therapy and the tramadol helped me to tolerate that until it began to help correct the sciatica. |

Effectiveness: | | Moderately Effective |
Side effects: | | No Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | Interstital Cystitis |
Dosage & duration: | | 50mg taken 1 tablet every 6 hrs for the period of One month |
Other conditions: | | Constant severe bladder pain |
Other drugs taken: | | Ambien for a sleep disorder | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | The first two days I took this drug the pain went away. Then, the effectiveness declined rapidly. I called my doctor and she increased the dosage to 100mg every 6 hours. This helped for about two days, and then it was back to being ineffective.
I think this is a rather weak way to manage daily pain associated with IC. |
Side effects: | | A little bit of nausea when the pill actually worked. No side effects at all when the pill didn't work. |
Comments: | | My IC cocktail started to work after about a month and there wasn't much need for pain killers anymore so I just stopped taking Tramadol.
In the future, when my IC would flare up, I requested no Tramadol and instead received Tylenol with Codiene. It worked much better. |

Effectiveness: | | Moderately Effective |
Side effects: | | Mild Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | Low back pain due to car accident |
Dosage & duration: | | 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours taken i usually took 3 every 6 hours for the period of i have been on tramadol for about 2 year |
Other conditions: | | none |
Other drugs taken: | | none | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | did not take my pain away fully but it took the edge off things and helped me throught the day to do some activities i usually could not do without the drug. |
Side effects: | | side effects were mild upset stomach, insomnia if taken before bed, boosted my mood, and social life. |
Comments: | | before tramadol i used hydrocodone (vicodin) which is a narcotic pain killer ..it was was very effective with my pain but had a terrible come down ,i was very irritable and was just mad at things that with a sober mind i would not be mad at. tramadol has little come down and has a more natural "high" it boost your mood , with little euphria unlike narcotic pain killers. it feels as if someone just put the nicest , softest, warm blanket over you
tramadol makes me alot more social, it boosts my mood and makes me just want to talk to people as normaly i would not want to associate with people as much.i recomend this drug to all. it is alot better for you than narcotic pain killers |

Overall rating: | | |
Effectiveness: | | Moderately Effective |
Side effects: | | Extremely Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | severe abdominal pain yet to be diagnosed |
Dosage & duration: | | 50mg-100mg taken every 4 to 6 hours for the period of 2 weeks |
Other conditions: | | insomnia and other GI issues |
Other drugs taken: | | elavil for GI problems and metaprolol for mitral valve prolapse | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | The benefits were almost non-existent. I had taken this med before after a terrible car accident and therefore felt secure enough to take it again this time. However after only one day medicine stopped being effective. |
Side effects: | | Some drowsiness at night after taken it throughout the day and some constipation. However after taking it for only two weeks I had a seizure that sent me to hospital and was told by doc there that elavil and tramadol combined can cause seizures! NO ONE told me this. Not my primary care doc, my GI doc or the pharmacist. This seems to me to be a pretty severe "side effect" for a medicine that barely works! The two meds were prescribed to me by the same physician and I understand oversights can happen. However if I had known from beginning that seizures might be a possibility I would asked for something else. Also after only two weeks I had some weird effects after stopping usage including diarrhea, cold sweats, hot flashes, restless leg syndrome and anxiety. I never experienced anything like this with any other meds. This medicine is NOT worth it! |
Comments: | | 1 to 2 50mg tablets every 4 to 6 hours. |

Dosage & duration: | | 50 to 100mg every 6 hours taken twice daily for the period of 13 months |
Other conditions: | | moderate pain due to badly damaged knee |
Other drugs taken: | | co codamol | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | I found tramadol quite effective before and after surgey to reconstruct my knee (acl). |
Side effects: | | side effects however ocurred almost straight away on intial dose of 100mg.The worst of which is a constant feeling of tiredness and lack of energy. This has not subsided even after a year of taking this medaction. Other side effects i have experienced are blurred vision and on the rare occasion mild muscle spasms.I also have found this drug to be addictive with a feeling of nervousness mixed with mild depression if a dose is missed. |
Comments: | | 100mg twice daily seems to work well for myself however if you can get away with taking co codamol i would recomend this first. co codamol worked wonders for me for the first 3 months however i soon built up a very high tolerance and was taking 60mg of codiene 4 times a day to get any effect hence the change to tramadol. |

Benefits: | | I was able to walk (although I should not have)and drive in total comfort. All the pain was aleviated throughout the period of time i was taking the tablets. I felt in full control of all of my senses, even though i was a little more relaxed than normal. |
Side effects: | | There was a definate difference in bowel motions. I simply did not go during the three days of taking the tablets. I feel that if i had, had to continue the medication for any length of time then i would have been most uncomfortable. I would have had to resort to some sort of laxative treatment. |
Comments: | | After badly twisting my ankle I took the pain killer Tramadol . Although I was advised to take one tablet , three times per day. I did actually only take two tablets during the day. I felt the results were more than enough. They worked well enough and long enough to last me for a longer period of time. |

Side effects: | | Extremely Severe Side Effects | | Treatment Info |
Condition / reason: | | Osteochondral injury of the Talus, Left ankle |
Dosage & duration: | | 50 mg taken 1 tablet every 8 hours for the period of Took it for two weeks or less |
Other conditions: | | Severe Stomachaches, Headaches, Unable to think for ones self, All over muscle aches, Self harm |
Other drugs taken: | | None | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | I had no benefits from this medication, if anything it added more problems for me. It never once relieved my pain in my ankle. Darvacet helped my ankle more then this medication. Even though I was switching because Darvacet was losing its effectiveness it would have been tons better to stay on Darvacet for all the bad Tramadol did for me. |
Side effects: | | My whole body ached I had severe stomachaches and headaches. I turned into a zombie all I did was stare at the wall. It would make me dizzy and at times I wouldn't know where I was at. I was scared to be on it, but I wasn't in my right mind to be able to take myself off of it. I took a blade one night and slashed both my arms up and hid the fact that I did it. I started to take myself off the medication. When I was able to think straight I admitted to people I know what I had done to my arms. Other then my ankle pain I felt 100% better off of Tramadol. I believe that if I were to stay on Tramadol I would have done something much worse. Since being off of this medication I realize how that person then wasn't me. That scared me more then anything ever. Doctor's need to monitor patients much more closely on Tramadol. I can't imagine that there are a lot of people with my reaction to it but I can't imagine even one other person having an adverse reaction like I did. |
Comments: | | I had an ankle accident at a job. I had this injury for a long time. There isn't much that can be done for it. So I will be on pain medication for the rest of my life. I had taken Darvacet for about 6 years before it lost its effectiveness. Tramadol was only the second pain medication I had ever tried. My doctor thought it would help me. I had never heard about it before. I never once thought I would have such a bad reaction to it. After taking almost 8 Darvacet a day I was ready to try anything else. I just wish for people to be very careful with Tramadol I don't want anyone else going through what I did. |

Other conditions: | | Required Hip to be resurfaced |
Other drugs taken: | | Endep, cortisone, | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | The benefits allowed me to physically calm. this allowed me to sleep better, eat less and encourage a better outlook. Without Tramal life was very down. |
Side effects: | | Immediate sleepness, so needed to be careful when I took the tablet. Had to be careful if I took any other medications or alochol as there would be 'high' episodes. |
Comments: | | I only was required to take one tablet in the evenings, this was easy and I never forgot. |

Condition / reason: | | Nightly leg pain |
Dosage & duration: | | two 50mg tablets at bedtime taken nightly for two years for the period of 2 years |
Other conditions: | | low potassium |
Other drugs taken: | | Klor Con (potassium) | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Completely stops nightly leg pain |
Side effects: | | No side effects at all |
Comments: | | After trying everything from muscle relaxers to strong narcotic pain meds which did nothing to help my nightly leg pain, I was given Tramadol. I was to take 2 50mg tablets at bed time. I went home that day from the doctor thinking this was yet another medicine that would not work. To my surprise it worked! It has been the only treatment that works for my leg pain. I have taken it nightly for 2 years now. It has no side effects for me at all. I have not shown any signs of being addicted to the drug. I do not need more than the original dosage to work. I feel perfectly normal when taking it and can function normally. It doesn't help with other pain though and that is puzzling to me. But at least it works for my leg pain so I can sleep like a normal person at night. |

Benefits: | | Completely eliminated neck pain. Interestingly, did not reduce slight-to-moderate left hip pain (see article on pain in 11/09 issue of Scientific American) |
Side effects: | | Slight euphoria, slight tiredness, but cannot sleep. |
Comments: | | I've had 2 compressed discs in neck for over 5 years. Had taken Hydrocodone plus Tylenol for a few months, but it had nasty side-effects (I don't know how Dr. House does it). Tramadol has worked consistently and effectively for over 2 years now. |

Side effects: | | There was mild drowsiness in the beginning or with taking the full allotted doses but no other adverse side effects. |
Comments: | | I take 2-4 Trmadol daily for my arthritis pain. Always 1 before bed and one upon waking if I begibn to feel pain during the day I may take another. my blood levels are monitored every 6 months to make sure there is no liver damage from this and/or the Ibuprofen I take. |

Dosage & duration: | | 50 mg every 6 hours taken once for the period of Only took it once |
Other conditions: | | n/a |
Other drugs taken: | | Relafen, bactrim, flexeril | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | I had inflammation in my ribs due to severe coughing from bronchitis. Doc told me to only take tramadol in cases where the pain was severe and not to mix with my muscle relaxer (flexeril). Tramadol did do a decent job of taking away the pain and helping me sleep. |
Side effects: | | I took tramadol once, that's all it took for me to decide I didn't want to take it again. I took it in the evening and went to sleep a few hours later, it made me very sleepy. Upon waking up in the morning I felt extremely nauseous, shaky and - it's hard to explain, I felt inside my head a lot. Very cloudy headed. I thought I'd feel better if I took a shower but ended up throwing up b/c I just couldn't stand up, all I wanted to do was lie down. I felt very dizzy. I laid down for about 10 mins and felt a little better, stomach was still upset though. I ate something and immediately felt nauseous, was shaking uncontrollably and sweating. I threw up again. The episodes continued through most of the day. But I felt better as time went on. I decided the side effects just aren't worth it! |
Comments: | | Overall Tramadol just isn't work the side effects I experienced. I'd rather take a few Aleve and deal with the left over pain. |

Other conditions: | | None |
Other drugs taken: | | None | | Reported Results |
Benefits: | | Eliminated the pain without the mental side effects of drugs like Vicodin. |
Side effects: | | Seemed to be a very mild mood elevator, but that could just have been due to having my mood improved from not being in pain. For the first couple days of taking it I suffered moderate insomnia/waking up during the night. This went away over the course of treatment. |
Comments: | | After surgery, I was offered Vicodin or Percocet but do not like either because they cause me to be too foggy mentally. I initially tried just Advil but that didn't work on the pain. The Dr. prescribed generic Ultram (Tramadol). It took quite awhile for the first one to take effect (more than an hour) but it provided long-lasting pain relief. I was a bit leery of it because I read online that it can be addictive however, after 3 weeks I cut the dose to 1x a day instead of 2x and then after 4 weeks stopped entirely with no ill effects after that. |

Benefits: | | I have severe pain in my lower abdomin that was so strong I couldn't sleep nor move around very well. Luckily I sit mostly at work so I was able to deal with a little while, but eventually I went to the ER and they prescribed me this. Which I have never heard or taken before. |
Side effects: | | I have read that a lot of people who take this are very tired and sleepy. I believe that everyone's body reacts differently to drugs. As far as my side effects goes I feel great. Almost a natural "high" if you will. I am very talkative and focused. I will say that I do not have much of an appetite. My stomach feels fine and the lower pain has gone away for the most part. I do realize I am taking more pills now because the effectivness has worn off a bit, doing my research on this I have heard that being the case many times. |
Comments: | | Overall I am going to a OBGYN specialist next week and they are going to determine what is the exact problem. As urgent care and the hospitalcould not figure it out, which scares me truthfully. Hopefully I will not have to take anything and the pain will go away. I recommend this to anyone who has moderate to severe pain as it has helped me dramatically, good luck to all. Pain is not something I wish on anyone. |
